5 Dental Secrets for Better Oral Health

Something we like to do on this blog is to provide both patient and non-patients alike with an inside scoop on oral health advice, coming from real, working Brooklyn dentists. But with these blog posts, we thought it was time to give some real truths about oral health (no more sugar-coating it!). Here are 5 dental secrets for better health:

  • If your gums bleed when you brush, you have periodontal disease: Even if your gums bleed every once in a while if you’re seeing bleeding, you’ve got the periodontal disease. It might not be what you want to hear, but it’s best to face it now and get it taken care of by scheduling an appointment with your dentist.
  • Do NOT chew ice, lollipops, popcorn kernels, or other hard foods: Have a habit of chewing ice? Stop it right now! Hard foods can damage your teeth, even cracking them.
  • Have more crunch foods and calcium in your diet: Brushing and flossing are great (obviously) but your diet will have a huge impact on your oral health. Crunchy foods can naturally remove stains from your teeth and calcium will strengthen your enamel. If raw vegetables aren’t a big part of their diet, make sure you start eating them regularly.
  • Don’t Brush Your Teeth after Eating: You might think that you should brush immediately after eating. But certain sugary foods weaken your enamel, and brushing can cause damage. Instead, rinse your mouth with water, then brush a half an hour after eating.
  • Brush Twice a Day and Floss Once Daily: You’ve heard this one before, I know. But that doesn’t mean everyone does it! It can be tough to floss, we all get busy or tired, but you need to make sure you do it daily to avoid oral health issues.
