When it comes to oral health, the best defense is a good offense. If you’ve got a cavity and you need a dentist in Brooklyn, we can certainly help, but I’m sure you’d much rather avoid having a cavity in the first place. Check out these ten tips to avoid cavities.

  1. Floss Regularly: Flossing regularly and frequently can help remove plaque that can not be removed from brushing alone. By flossing, you can greatly lower the chance that you’ll get cavities.
  2. Request a Fluoride Treatment: Next time you visit the dentist for a check up, ask if you should receive a fluoride treatment. Your dentist may even recommend it.
  3. Avoid Frequent Snacking: The more you snack throughout the day, the more likely you are to damage your enamel. If possible, keep snacking to a minimum.
  4. Drink Tap Water: Bottled water, unlike tap water, does not contain fluoride. Drinking fluoridated tap water regularly can help reduce the likelihood of cavities.
  5. Visit the Dentist: By seeing the dentist regularly (every six months) they will be able to keep an eye on teeth that may be close to becoming cavities.
  6. Use Dental Sealants: Sealants can help protect your teeth from acid that destroys enamel.
  7. Eat the Right Foods: Just as certain foods can hurt your teeth, others can strengthen them and prevent cavities. Try eating foods like cheese and yogurt which are high in calcium.
  8. Brush After Every Meal: If possible, brush after every meal. This will help prevent some of the damage that the acid in your food may cause.
  9. Use Mouth Wash with Fluoride: If you you’re using mouth wash (which you should) be sure to use one with fluoride.
